Signs of Good Health We Look for in Horses

The AAEP website is an excellent source of information for horse owners and offers a list of key signs to look for in a horse to evaluate their soundness.

Some of these signs include:

  • Bright-eyed and alert
  • A hearty appetite
  • Clear eyes (no clouding or discoloration)
  • Clean nostrils, free of excessive discharge
  • A body condition score of 4-5
  • A shiny hair coat
  • Pink, moist gums
  • Even weight bearing of all 4 feet

If you notice anything abnormal about your horse, whether their eyes look cloudy or their attitude appears more lethargic, get in touch with Wimberley Veterinary Clinic at (512) 847-5630 today.

Since I moved to Wimberley in 2016, Dr. Sheffield has been my vet. I have two quarter horse geldings, one 25 one 15 who have Cushings. This clinic has been great to work with and display caring and kindness. One day I was there and was just really down about one of my horses along with a lot of stuff happening and I broke down in tears. They were compassionate and understanding. They are great with my horses and with me!!!
